Boko Haram
Members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, on Saturday morning laid siege on the Maiduguri/Damaturu highway, killing ten persons in Ngamdu town, killing 10 persons.
A member of a youth vigilante group, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the insurgents killed 10 persons before soldiers repelled them.
The spokesman for the vigilante group in Borno State, Mr. Ibrahim Gunda, confirmed the attack but said, “I cannot tell you the casualty yet but there was an attack on Gunda, a town on Maiduguri/Damaturu highway earlier today.”
In a related development, a suicide bomber who drove a commercial tricycle killed three persons and injured three others on Saturday morning in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, witnesses said.
According to one of the witnesses, Yusuf Adamu, the explosion occurred at about 7.10am when motor parks in the town were full of activities and travelers who wanted to board buses going out of the town.
Adamu said a tricycle attempted to ram into a vehicle that just came out of Borno Motor Garage, the biggest in the town.
Adamu, who claimed he was near the scene of the incident, said the tricycle driver had waited for the vehicle to emerge from the motor park, and immediately the vehicle drove out, the suspect sped after the bus but could not catch up with it.
About a kilometer away it exploded and killed three passersby on the highway, leaving another three persons injured.
He said, “I was at the motor park to board a vehicle when the explosion occurred. The park is near the SSS office and a tricycle was targeting a bus that just left the motor park but triggered off the explosion before the tricycle could get to bus. Four people including the bomber were killed.”
