In a July 1993 interview with Nigeria’s leading newsmagazine, TheNEWS, Maj. General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress said this about democracy:
“On this question of democracy, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, a whole empire, and a socialist system, to some of us it is conclusive that democracy is the best system. Let people be firstly properly educated, about their rights and let them choose their leaders. As an avenue for change without shedding blood, democracy is the best. Democracy does not make sense if elections are rigged, if the manner in which the elections are organised continues to be corrupt then that type of democracy is not acceptable.”

Buhari gave the interview, eight years after he was toppled by General Ibrahim Babangida, at a time Nigeria had held the 12 June 1993 election, said to be the best ever held in Nigeria, but which Babangida strangely annulled.
And some people still call a man with this view, a Jackboot! A jackboot or a born again democrat?
