I will turn Ero Dam to economic tourism hub- Moba LG , Chairman
The chairman of Moba Local Government Council, Otun Ekiti Ekiti
State, Mr Olusoga Davies has said that he love to turn the Ero Dam
located in Ikun Ekiti into a wonderful tourists’ attraction and also
explore the agricultural potentialities of the water to engage his
people.
Mr Davies made this known during an encounter he had with the Tribune
Tourism Magazine crew which was on sightseeing at the bank of the the
third largest dam in Nigeria.
He said: ‘Ero dam has been here since
the 70s and it has been a blessing to Ikun community and Moba Local
Government and the state in general as it serves almost half of Ekiti
State with water supply . But I don’t think the beauty should stop at
this.”
“When you look at the size of the dam, it is the third largest in
Nigeria and it has potentials for social and economic development. The
potentialities are great from agriculture, to tourism, to fishery,
irrigation and social events like hosting boat regatta. It also has the
potentialities of engaging over 20,000 youths who could be gainfully
employed here by bringing floating cages for fish farming and rearing.”
The dam he said manoeuvered through many villages which speed boats could be used as means of transportation.
“We can also have speed boat so that one can move from here
to Ilejemeje Local government without going by cars to see what is
happening there and come back.”
He said that there was also opportunity for irrigation farming and
revealed that “I have to thank the executive Governor of Ekiti State, Dr
Kayode Fayemi, who has just acquired 1000 hectares of land in this area
so that we can start farming. We are working towards this and
recruiting farmers who are ready to own farms.”
Mr Davies said that the local government was ready and willing to
collaborate with whoever wishes to invest in around the dam “ We are not
waiting on this alone. We are calling on investors or whoever wishes to
do business which will add value to this dam. The water is available
while land is also an incentive for those who want to build hotels and
other tourism centres as this is a perfect arena for relaxation and
pleasure. It can also be used as film village, these are some of the
potentials we have that are underutilised. The only thing we take from
here is drinking water rather than using it for industrial growt. It can
be changed to a tourist centre, very close here is Erinmope where
there is a golf course, tourists can really be engaged at Rosani Golf
Course and come back here to relax. We can also have a regatta here
while a fishing festival can successfully be held here. Many things can
happen here if the investors are ready and we are willing to support
too.”
