Called the“Ugliest Woman in the World”, Julia Pastrana is finally back where she deserves to be, to her birthplace in Mexico.
The ‘Ape Woman’ will finally be buried after 150 years since her death in 1860. Her body, whcih was covered in hair due to a rare disease, was exhibited across the world and ended up in a storage room at an Oslo research institute.
According to New York Times, visual artist Laura Anderson Barbata led a campaign to have the body returned to Mexico. On Tuesday, she finally got what she was fighting for.
“I felt she deserved the right to regain her dignity and her place in history, and in the world’s memory. I hoped to help change her position as a victim to one where she can be seen in her entirety and complexity,” Barbata said.
