Ooni preaches peace, love at Oranmiyan Festival 2014 Wale Ojo-Lanre The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse 11 has called on all Nigerians irrespective of ethnic, political, religious and cultural affinity to seek peace, embrace love, and establish harmonious relationship with one another. ADVERTISEMENT The Ooni who made this call during a briefing session conducted by Mr Lawrence Omidiora on the conduct and celebration of this year’s Odun Oranmiyan after the 2014 Odun Oranmiyan Lecture which was delivered by Oba Aderemi Adedapo, the Olojudo Alayemore of Ido Osun said peace is not only the key to national development but also self fulfilment. He commended the organisers of the festival their quest and passion at ensuring that enviable legacies, accomplishments and astounding prowess of the most wonderful and enigmatic son of Oduduwa are not rummaged in the ocean of historical forgetfulness. The Ooni lauded Oba Adedapo for his deep commitment for the resuscitation and revitalisation of the culture and tradition of Yoruba. Ooni prayed for peace in Nigeria, Osun State and prosperity for all Oramiyan scions in their different places of abode. Oba Alayemore elucidates Oramiyan’s unifying acts The 2014 Odun Oranmiyan packaged by Flasby Travels and Tours will go down in history as one which unveils to the world the hidden virtues and accomplishments of Oramiyan as a great empire builder who traversed the world planting socio-cultural and political territories, which continued to blossom till today. The crowd and guests who thronged the palace hall were spelled bound by the revelations of the enigmatic personality, indelible accomplishments and undeniable contributions of Oranmiyan to the evolution of modern Yoruba land by Oba Adedapo who supported every statement he made concerning Oranmiyan with verifiable dates and scholastic authentication. “We learnt in history that there is no human being born before Oranmiyan and none after him that God blessed with unfathomable skill at procreation, impregnability and invincibility at war, adeptness at administration with uncommon political sagaciousness, his deftness and masterly at conflict resolution and a diplomat par excellence. He was a man with no peer,” Olojudo Alayemore explained. Oba Adedapo Aderemi revealed that “Oranmiyan was abundantly enabled by God almighty not with only these special gifts, but with a unique aura which drew him affectionately to others. Anywhere he stepped into became his foothold and the next for the people to beg him to be the king for a particular period or for his son to ascend the throne. “Oranmiyan can be handsomely referred to as a wondrous Iroko tree which conveniently populated a forest.” Oba Adedapo advocated the total identification and celebrations of all the deities and festivals that have peculiarity with Yoruba culture to boost the promotion and preservation of the race’s culture and tradition. Oba Adedapo pointed out, “Yoruba has a very rich culture and tradition that should not be allowed to perish and this can only be possible if we duly recognised those deities and celebrate the festivals the way it was done in the past, this will unite us as a society that enjoys divine guidance and sanity as there will be no crime, ailment or disaster in this region.” While speaking on the role of Oranmiyan in the growth and development of Yoruba people, Alayemore said, “Oranmiyan was a man who contributed enormously to the expansion of Yoruba race. “He established kingdoms and towns, fought and won so many wars through which he liberated the people of Yoruba race against the invasion of the Fulani Jihadists and other people who were tried to colonise Yoruba land. “Today, Oranmiyan is everywhere, his actions during his lifetime are unifying factors between Yoruba race all over the world. The monarch whose lecture intermittently was punctuated by applauds from the of personalities who graced the occasion said, “Yoruba race is the most blessed in the world and our negligence of certain aspects of our tradition and culture is a contributing factor to the present position we are in the global context. But, we can get out of it if our traditional rulers unite and initiate ideas that will contribute to the development of our culture and tradition. He equally urged the government to encourage the celebration of such festival by declaring a day for such occasion, “Ile-Ife is our own Jerusalem and Mecca. What these two communities mean to them over there is what Ile-Ife means to Yoruba race and traditional worshippers, the government should create a tourism market that will attract people from all over the world to Ile Ife for spiritual rebirth and pilgrimage.” Corroborating Alayemore’s claims on Oranmiyan, the Owa Eredumi of Ife-Ife, Chief Olaoluwa Omiwenu Odeyele, said “Oranmiyan was a man of peace who detested injustice and oppression, majority of the battles he fought were to liberate people and today we are happy that we have kingdoms, towns and communities across Africa and Diaspora who have direct historical link with Oranmiyan.” The Owa Eredumi maintained further, “We mystified Oranmiyan because of his role as a liberator and powerful deity in Yorubaland. “In addition, this is where he died, we have his grave yard inside this shrine and if you look at his staff clearly, you will see some things written in the first language to be developed in the world. Language that is to tell you that Oranmiyan activities were not limited to Yoruba land, and people from all over the world come here to pray and seek his face for spirituality.” “Our role here is to appease Oranmiyan to help us prevent wars and afflictions and any forms of disaster from ravaging our lands. We have prayed against Boko Haram invasion of the Southwest and you can see they can’t come down to the region, because we have received positive response from Oramiyan, he has never failed us and he will continue to protect us.” Speaking on the celebration, Chief Odeyele said, “This is part of the appeasement we are talking about, We carry out certain spiritual processes and invite people to come and celebrate with us, anybody seeking spiritual help comes here to pray and go back with solutions. There are testimonies to that effect so, celebrating Oranmiyan in Ile-Ife is an important festival, which I think should also be included in the calendar of all the Yoruba speaking state. One of the organisers of the 2014 Odun Oranmiyan, Mr Omidiora had earlier in his welcome address said “Odun Oranmiyan is purposely designed to raise further and sensitise the world about the relevance of Oranmiyan to the Yoruba race and at the same time contribute to promotion of socio-cultural development of Yoruba culture.” The three-days, event started on Thursday, November 20, 2014 with a traditional procession and carnival float with festival art exhibition, it continued on Friday 21, with a lecture by the Alayemore of Ido Osun,Oba Adedapo, Ayo Olopon competition, traditional dance. Musical Concert and Omidan Oranmiyan were the highlights of the festival that ended on Saturday with a carnival procession to the site of Opa Oramiyan where Owa Eredumi prayed for all.
