Boko Haram stalls take off of new Oyo Technical Varsity

Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Mr. Ismail Olalekan Alli (middle), Chairman, Governing Council of Technical University, Ibadan, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi (left) and the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Solomon Olaniyonu (right) at a press briefing announcing the postponement of the take-off of the institution, at the Executive Council Chambers of the Governor's Office, Ibadan on Wednesday

The Oyo State Government on Wednesday announced the postponement of the formal take-off of its Technical University, Ibadan, attributing to the security situation in the country.
The development was announced at a joint press conference held at the State Executive Council Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Ibadan by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Ismail Olalekan Alli and the Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi.
It would be recalled that the university, established by the state government, had hitherto been scheduled to formally take-off with the admission of its new set of students in September 2014.
However, the SSG, at the press briefing, said that the institution would not be able to commence academic activities in September 2014 as earlier scheduled due to the recent upsurge and spread of insurgency resulting in general insecurity across the country.
He said that all the necessary arrangements had been put in place towards the take-off of the university in September part of which he said was the arrival of advance parties of the partner institution, that is, the Texas Technical University of the United States of America in April this year.
Mr. Alli, however, said that the advance parties were recalled by the partner institution in USA towards the end of last month, thus necessitating the shift in the take-off of the institution.
``We have mutually agreed to watch the security development until January next year when we would review the situation and determine an appropriate take-off date,’’ the SSG said, adding, however, that the infrastructural development currently going on in the campuses of the university at Ajoda New Town, Egbeda and on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway would go on unhindered.
Also speaking, Prof. Afolabi assured that the university would rank among the best in the world, given the arrangement being put in place by both the state government and the Technical University of Texas to provide an exceptional educational experience for students as well as ambience for teaching and learning.
Prof. Afolabi, a former Head of Service of the Federation, said that the university would be run on a public-private partnership (PPP) which he said would enhance its sustainability and make it distinct from other universities in Nigeria.

Edem Duke has a case to answer on Fascinating Nigeria Project !

     Wale Ojo-Lanre , Nigerian Tribune
)
In July 2013, the Minister of Culture,  Tourism and National Orientation Chief Edem Duke dragged eminent personalities, business dignitaries and  tourism practitioners to the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa for the launching of a tourism brand christened ‘Fascinating Nigeria’, a new way of communicating the tourism brand that Nigeria is offering to the world.
The event was not just one of the run-in-the-mills programmes as it commanded the presence of the President, Dr.  Goodluck Jonathan who was represented by the Vice-President, Alhaji Mohammed Sambo.
Others at the venue were Governor Liyel Imoke, Cross Rivers, Mrs Folorunso Alakija, a fashion icon, selected media houses and executives of Tourism Associations, state Commissioners for Tourism and others.
Packaged to be a great event, the pre- launching of Fascinating Nigeria Project was greeted with publicity and marketing campaigns raising the hope and making the nation to believe that a solution has been found to the lingering underestimation of the tourism sector.
The launching ceremony was handled in the most glamorous style, which belched out glitz, colour and fantasy with almost all leading musical stars, comedians, artists, Nollywood icons displayed their talents to excite the world that Nigeria is simply fascinating.
A Nigerian journalist who witnessed the launching vividly captured the night thus, “The foyer of the Banquet Hall was a grand exhibition room with artefacts from across the country competing for attention with models adorned in the best of Nigeria fashion, and giant portraits of past leaders hung on the walls.”
Nikki Laoye who belted out a rousing rendition of the National Anthem kicked off the formalities. This was followed by a cultural dance by the National Troupe tagged “A coat of Many Colours” to celebrate Nigeria’s diversity.
Up next was a medley of musical performances starting with Omawumi, then Inyanya, Tuface and and P-Square. Veteran juju artist, King Sunny Ade, also dazzled the audience with dance steps that belied his age.
It was also a night of screenings as Nigeria’s history and heritage was shown through footage of some of the country’s important sites, rich endowments, the Nollywood industry, football icons and the forthcoming centenary celebration.
Some of Nigeria’s leading hospitality spots where also included in the minutes-long video which to a large extent portrayed Nigeria as an interesting proposition for potential tourists.”
The Minister did great work to uniquely express and impress the guests and the world that Nigeria did all have what it takes to become a force to be reckoned with in the comity of tourism nations.
“This is a new beginning for Nigerian tourism and the brand Nigeria.”
Thus with the grandiose launching which was not only a star-studded, culturally expressive and touristically  explosive, Fascinating Nigeria Project raised the hope of tourism stakeholders and Nigerians  who believe that a year after  the launch, Nigeria and Nigerians would have been reaping  the dividends of the branding and Nigeria would have fascinated a lot of people.
Despite the successful launching of Fascinating Nigeria Project some critics were of the opinion that the project was nothing but a charade concocted by the Minister to dazzle the President and Nigeria that he has something to offer
According to Otunba Adewale Martins, Public Communication Director, Hospitality Watch, who reacted after the launching of the project last year, ”Brand or branding in tourism is a good idea especially for a country like Nigeria which is suffering from battered image and under reporting particularly in the tourism sector. But, I will tell you that very soon, we shall all realize that this Edem Duke’s one  is a charade and a dazzling stunt to impress the President that he is working and to pool wool in the eyes of the nation. I bet you, going by the circumstances of the launching when Boko Haram insurgency is biting hard and the conception of this project, which is not altruistic; it is another white elephant project, which will not withstand the test of time. Nothing good will come out of it. Let us wait for the next 12 months.”
It is exactly 12 months that Fascinating Nigeria Project was truly launched with pomp and ceremony, apart from the fact that the replica of the launching was held at the World Travel Market in London, (WTM), in November last year, nothing stronger seemed to have come out of the project.
Also, the Minister has not only failed to follow up on his expressed determination of making the branding a useful project to Nigeria, but also failed to ensure that the President affirmed his promises to the sector according to the content of his speech on that fateful night when the Fascinating Nigeria Project Nigeria project was launched in the most fascinating manner and delightful colours.
Chief Duke owes the nation and tourism stakeholders the duty of revealing what truncated the promising glow of the much celebrated Fascinating Nigeria Project launched extravagantly at the bowels of the Presidential Villa and attended by the President last year July or he wants us to believe that it was just an ill conceived, revenue guzzling white elephant projected beautifully collared and packaged to deceive Nigeria?

Three feet tall man marries five feet tall woman
At just under three-and-a-half foot tall, Arif Ibrahim Tambe had resigned himself to life alone.
But at 32 years old, having grown against a backdrop of extreme size prejudice, he finally found love – with a woman almost 2ft taller than him.
His new wife Ameena Ahmed, 21, even agreed to marry him - despite the threat of being disowned by her family.
And they have now taken their relationship to new heights by having their first child together.
BarcroftArif Ibrahim Tambe
Looked after: Ameena Ahmed cares for her husband too
He said: "I feel like God took something away and now he has given something back. I have got a reason to live my life. God has given me what I wished for."
The couple met in a mobile phone shop three years ago and both say it was love at first sight.
Arif, who has a form of dwarfism, was worried she would eventually reject him when she realised the full extent of his care needs.
He said: “She said 'I like you and I want to marry you' - so I sat down and told her everything."
BarcroftArif Ibrahim Tambe
Happy: The trio have an inseparable bond
"I said 'if you marry me you will have to do everything for me. You will have to take me to the toilet, to the bathroom and to the shower'. I told her everything and she still agreed."
Just two years later the couple, who live in Pune, in the west of India, sealed their happiness with a lavish wedding in their hometown of Mumbai - but not everyone was happy.
Ameena, who is 5ft 2in tall, said: "When our marriage was fixed, all my relatives opposed it. They would taunt me, saying that my would-be husband is a dwarf.
"In the end, none of my relatives attended my wedding."

Care: Arif's wife looks after his needs, despite early opposition from her family
Her immediate family have now accepted the marriage, but her wider family are still distant.
Determined not to be a burden – especially after the arrival of his new son Aseem Arif Tambe - Arif has invested in an electric wheelchair, which gives him more independence.
And with their newfound confidence the couple are more comfortable to be seen out in public together.
"Their reaction to me is still the same as before," said Arif, who has suffered size prejudice for most of his life.
"But now they look at us together with shock and say ‘look at his wife’.”

OYO 2015;I AM STILL IN THE RACE – SEN LADOJA

The National leader of the Accord Party Sen Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja has debunked  the insinuation that he has endorsed a particular candidate for the next year governorship election in the state saying that he will contest in 2015

Sen Ladoja who a former governor of the state said he has not endorsed any candidate because he is also interested in the post will soon obtain expression of interest form when the time comes
The  Ibadan born politician in an interactive session with journalists at his residence  maintained that  Accord Party will win gubernatorial seat in the next election because of the antecedent and past records which speaks well of the party
Oyo 2015;I am still in the race – Sen Ladoja According to him” only God is helping us in accord as we have nothing new to tell people but our past records are speaking for us you can imagine when civil servant who did not get their salary lamenting that this was not so during the era of Ladoja, during our time we did not demolish shops without building another one neither do we neglects people urgent need leaving it for more than three years before getting serious about it as in the case of Apete brige“
While speaking on the present political situation in the country, Sen Ladoja said it was the ACN now APC that wakes up the PDP from their slumber “ the only things the PDP use to say is that they will rule  the country for 60 years but by the time they realize that the APC is taking over  the house of reps after they have  captured some state they wake  up and started  what they are doing now  but it may be difficult for them to have  Oyo state because there is no formidable structure that will  win elections like that of Ekiti.

“ Fayose was able to get party ticket and win election in Ekiti because he was in charge of the party  executives, Omisore was in charge of the party executives in Osun  and who is in charge of the executive in Oyo  so whatever happens in Osun will not happen in Oyo state because Accord party will be in control by 2015

Reduce weight and win gold in Dubai

Reduce weight and win gold in Dubai

Dubai Municipality launches ‘Your Weight in Gold’ initiative

Dubai Municipality has launched a community initiative under the slogan 'Your Weight in Gold' aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging members of society to achieve and maintain their optimal body weight.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, has launched this initiative after the success of the 'Yallah Walk' initiative launched in 2011. Senior officials from Dubai Municipality, Ahmed bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman of Dubai Multi-Commodities Centre and Anil Dhanak, General Manager of Dubai Gold and Jewelry Group, were present on the occasion.

"It is aimed at introducing walking tracks in different parks in Dubai. Walking is as an easy and economic way to stay fit and healthy that people can easily apply to their day-to-day life. Dubai Municipality has provided residents with safe and accessible walking tracks," Lootah said.

"Currently Dubai has 91 places to practice sporting activities, including residential parks, public parks, squares, jogging tracks and beaches. In addition, every year the civic body opens new parks in more areas and adds sports equipment and tools for the public to promote a healthy community," he said.

"Ramadan is the most appropriate season to launch such initiatives as it reminds us of the many health benefits of reducing weight and encourages us to take steps to change our bad lifestyles," he added.

Ahmed bin Sulayem said, "DMCC is proud to work with Dubai Municipality and DGJG to further support His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in his ‘Your Weight in Gold’ health awareness drive to encourage society to change their daily routines in return for a healthier lifestyle.

"We would highly encourage everyone from all walks of life to take part in this great initiative and hope DMCC’s contribution of Dh100,000 worth of gold coins will help motivate individuals reach the final target of improving and sustaining a healthy lifestyle and consequently a better quality of life," he said.

Anil Dhanak, DGJG, said, "It is amazing to know that the municipality takes initiatives to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and I believe that this how Dubai distinguishes from other cities in the world. I am sure Dubai can be the role model and astonish the world by its innovative ideas and initiatives."

The weight losing contest sponsored by DGJG and DMCC is open for public participation. The winners will get 2gm of gold if they reduce at least 2kg weight of their body within one month.

The overall winner will be the person who achieves the highest weight loss during the programme period of 30 days from its inception on  July 19. The minimum weight to lose for eligibility is 2kg and participants will get one gram of gold for each kilo reduced from his/her body weight.

The top three winners will get a gold coin equivalent to Dh20,000  through a lucky draw. The weight of each participant will be measured at the point of initial registration and again at the end of the programme.

Neither pilot nor passenger hurt

A small plane crash-landed on a beach in the US state of Florida Sunday, killing a father and critically injuring his young daughter, authorities said Sunday.

The mid-afternoon incident in Venice involved a 1972 Piper Cherokee aircraft and neither the pilot nor his passenger was hurt, Wendy Rose of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The deceased father was walking along the Gulf Coast beach with his daughter when the plane crash-landed, Rose said.

The girl was transported to a children's hospital in St. Petersburg "and is believed to be in critical condition," she added.

Rose said the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office was notified by Venice Airport officials that the pilot would attempt to make a beach landing after signaling he was in distress and could not make it back to the airfield.

Dubai International re-opens refurbished runway

Dubai International re-opens refurbished runway

Flights that had temporarily moved to DWC returns to Dubai International

Dubai Airports has announced successful resumption of its full operations at Dubai International from Monday following the reopening of the northern runway.
The company says that flights that had temporarily moved to Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC) while the runway upgrades were underway have now returned to Dubai International.
The number of flights at Dubai International surged by about 31 per cent with the opening of both runways, when compared to the number of flights during the 80-day closure. Despite the sudden increase in traffic, operations ran smoothly.
Dubai International now boasts two newly refurbished runways which allow the airport to accommodate more aircraft while improving operational flexibility during busy peak traffic periods. The runway upgrades were part of Dubai Airports’ $7.8bn SP2020 master-plan aimed at expanding Dubai International’s capacity to help accommodate more than 103 million passengers by 2020, according to Dubai Airports.
Both of the airport’s runways were closed consecutively from May 1 for 80-day period. The project involved the resurfacing of the entire 4,000-metre long northern runway as well as the upgrading of runway lighting and construction of additional taxiways and rapid exits on the southern runway.
Airlines that have moved flights from DWC back to Dubai International include flydubai, Malaysian Airlines, Royal Brunei and PAL Express as well as selected flights from Qatar Airways and Gulf Air. Four airlines will continue to offer flights from DWC including Wizz Air, Gulf Air, Qatar Airways and Jazeera Airways.
"I am pleased that our planning and preparations over the past year not only ensured that the impact on passengers during the 80-day period was minimal but that we were able to resume full operations and accommodate increased traffic at the end of the programme without a hitch," said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.
"The runway upgrade programme tested the mettle of the over 60,000 people who work at DXB whose dedication and teamwork resulted in the successful delivery of an incredibly demanding programme, led by Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects and Dubai Airports’ operations, while maintaining high traffic volumes and top-flight service levels," added Griffiths. "Additionally it allowed tens of thousands of passengers to experience the speed, convenience and efficiency of DWC, Dubai’s second airport."
