Commissioner expresses concern on rate of child abandonment in Ondo

THE Ondo State  Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development,  Yemi Mamud-Fasominu, has expressed  government dissatisfaction over the increased rate  abandon child cases in the stte

 she  said this at Ikare-Akoko, Akoko North-East Local Government Area of the state while speaking during the monthly women meeting tagged: Gbebiro.

She said the rate at which people now abandoned infants and new born babies was alarming and called for concern.

According to her, about six babies were abandoned in various places and picked up by officials of the ministry, saying one of the babies was abandoned on the bonnet of a car in a mechanic workshop.
The commissioner said act was rampant among young ladies, wondering why they decided to abandon their babies after carrying the pregnancy for nine months.

She said, “this thing has been reoccurring and it is becoming unacceptable, it happens that when people have challenges like the death of husband leaving that woman alone to take care of herself or case of financial incapability, the next thing should not be abandoning the child.
“The ministry of women affairs is one that offers social services, it is a ministry that is ready to attend to people, one of our focus is how to resettle women, may be due to the death of their husbands or financial incapability.
“Instead of abandoning the child such should be brought to the ministry, we will take care of such child, we have a children home where our officials give such children the best treatment available.
Speaking on the monthly meeting, Mamud-Fasominu said it was an avenue for  women of the state to interact and be enlightened about development in their environment.
The commissioner said the government had been using the meetings to address issues that affect them.
She said, “Gbebiro is never a jamboree, it is not about dancing or eating, it is an avenue to enable women of the state come together and deliberate on issues that affect them.
“Every month, we gather and we discuss, this month, we are having talk on menopause, it is an important stage in the development of any woman, it is a stage that any woman will pass through.
“Every month, we also have the officials of maternal pulse that do medical check up for women and we collate the statistics, any woman that needs medical attention after the check is always taken care of by Her Excellency, the wife of the governor.”
