Ekiti is cancer free- Gov Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi on Wednesday declared war against cancer in the State; saying that his administration would ensure that none of the citizens is lost to the dreaded disease anymore.

Giving the assurance in Ado Ekiti during an inspection tour of the ongoing construction of Funmi Olayinka Cancer Diagnostic Centre located within the premises of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH),on Wednesday, Governor Fayemi said the centre is not only being put in place in honour of the late Deputy Governor, Mrs Funmi Olayinka but also to ensure that all the citizens, especially female gender is safeguarded against cancer.

Fayemi who lamented the demise of the former Deputy Governor stated that the centre would enable women carry out regular medical check-up on themselves, as early detection can help in effectively managing the disease.
He added that though there is no cure for the disease, the war against the disease would be won as long as people check their health status and obtain ‘a clean bill of health’.

“You know that we had a purpose for doing this. We lost someone so dear to all of us in Ekiti to the dreaded disease called cancer and one of the commitments we made to ourselves and the people is that we are going to have a diagnostic centre for early detection of cancer particularly as it affects women.

Even if we don’t have the capacity to cure, once it is discovered early, then the management is easier and you don’t have to suffer any loss of life if it is discovered at the first stage, and we don’t want to lose anyone. So we need a place we can visit without having to pay a fortune to check themselves and do the screening and ultimately have a clean bill of health”, he stated.
The centre, which will be equipped with modern equipment, would focus more on early detection and treatment of cancer.

The representative of the Acting Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr Kayode Ajite, the Director of Administration, Mr Deji Dada and the Special Adviser to the Governor on MDG and Multilateral relations, Mrs Bunmi Dipo-Salami, conducted the governor round the project which is nearing completion.
