Ajimobi promises jobs for Area Boys, as Nollywood actors hail Gov. on performance
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has promised that his administration will provide jobs for street urchins, popularly known as Area Boys, in order to completely rid the state of crimes and criminal activities.
This pledge came even as Nollywood actors and actresses hailed the governor for his brilliant performance in the last two years, describing it as unprecedented in the history of the state.
Governor Ajimobi, while speaking at the popular Mapo Hall in Ibadan, shortly after completing the third edition of the monthly fitness walk tagged 'Ajumorin Walk', said that arrangements had been made to ensure that the Area Boys were gainfully engaged so that they too could contribute meaningfully to the development of the state.
The Ajumorin Walk, which took off from Challenge and terminated at Mapo Hall, was led by the governor and it featured other participants such as the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mrs. Monsurat Sunmonu and members of the State Executive Council.
The Walk also featured top government functionaries, a huge number of Nollywood actors and actresses, local government chairmen, politicians, market men and women and the general public.
The governor, who expressed his government’s commitment to improving the lots of the state in all ramifications through the creation of wealth, stressed that there would be no particular segment of the society that would be left behind in the scheme of things.
``We will create wealth; we must improve this state; that is the essence of our being here. What Oyo State needs today are actualizers and not dreamers and that is exactly what we have been doing,’’ he said.
Governor Ajimobi promised to follow the legacy of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whom, he said, committed all his efforts towards developing the old Western Region.
``Chief Obafemi Awolowo had dreamt for us; he did it for us and the roadmap is there. We want those who have the courage, the intellect, the commitment and the discipline to do things. We are no longer in the era of frivolities and non-performance. Oyo State has moved up,’’ he said.
According to the governor, the essence of the Ajumorin Walk, which he said would be held monthly, was to ensure a healthy living and to give environmental support.
``It is necessary for people to walk. When they walk and engage in physical exercise, it makes them healthy and to live long. A healthy state is a wealthy state. When you are healthy, you will be able to contribute more to the society.
``This kind of walk also mobilizes people; it unifies people; it brings everybody together as one state, one people, with one objective and one goal, and in unity, there is strength,’’ the governor explained.
He also said that the Walk would allow the visibility of government officials and also bring government closer to the people.
``It also lets the people see their governor, their commissioners; you see people waiving at us, expressing joy, showing interest in governance, and I think for all these reasons, we decided to do the walk and we will be doing it every month,’’ he said.
