Left in a car for as long as six days without food or water, a young pug-beagle mix named Zipper is lucky to be alive. The dog was discovered outside a shopping center in Washington state earlier this week.

Security guards at Westwood Village found the shaking dog lying in the back seat of the car at 1 a.m. Sunday and called 911. One of the guards said the car had been parked in the same spot for the past six days.

"The dog appeared frightened and was shaken and appeared to be in distress," Detective Renee Witt of the Seattle Police Department told Komo News.

Police located the owner of the car, who has not been identified. Officials said the owner's boyfriend was reportedly responsible for looking after the dog.

"We're going to have a conversation with this individual, try to educate them about the proper care for the dog and let them know that it's not acceptable to leave a dog inside a car on a warm day like today," said Don Baxter, manager of animal care and volunteer programs for the Seattle Animal Shelter.

No charges have been filed.

The emaciated, skittish animal was brought to the Seattle Animal Shelter, where volunteers and shelter staff nursed it back to health.

Authorities investigating the matter tell Komo News that they are still trying to determine exactly how many days the dog was left without food or drink, despite the initial report from security guards.

"That's a big concern for us, and that would actually be animal neglect," Witt said.
