12 Arrested for Raping a Woman in South Africa
Twelve men were arrested on Thursday
morning for allegedly gang-raping a woman near Driefontein Number Five shaft in
Carletonville, Gauteng police said.
"It is alleged that the victim and her friend were on their way home to Mpahla Village in Carletonville on Wednesday when they were confronted by illegal miners," police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said.
The woman, 23, was hit on the head with a knobkerrie before being dragged to nearby bushes where she was allegedly raped by eight men.
Her friend escaped unharmed.
Dlamini claimed that the men then took the woman to a shack where another four men joined in raping her.
"She sustained multiple injuries on the head, face and body, and was taken to hospital," he said.
The arrested men were from Lesotho and would appear soon in the Carletonville Magistrate's Court. The other men were still being sought.
