Mimiko’s Wife Offers Free Cancer Screening, Treatment to 1000 Women
In a bid to curb the spread of cancer among women, the wife of Ondo State Governor and founder of the Maternal Pulse Foundation (MPF), Mrs Olukemi Mimiko, has initiated free cancer screening and treatment to women across the state to prompt early detection.
The exercise which is an initiative of Mrs. Mimiko’s foundation, the Maternal Pulse Foundation (MPF), has conducted cancer screening for over 1,000 women across the state. The wife of the governor also pledged to foot the bill for the treatment of indigent patients diagnosed with the disease among those who have participated in the free screening exercise.
Mrs. Mimiko, who stated this in Akure at the weekend, said the exercise became necessary as a result of the number of deaths caused by the disease daily.
The governor’s wife assured of her continued support through her pet project, the MPF, to promote maternal care and welfare of women, she promised that the foundation would not hesitate to promptly response to the needs of the people.
She however urged women to be more committed to their health and their family, because according to her early detection of breast cancer is essential for quick and successful treatment of the disease.
She said: “Go for medical checkup at least once a year to know your health status. Only early detection of any disease can save the affected individual. Remember that cervical cancer kills one Nigerian woman every hour; breast cancer kills over 10,000 Nigerian women every year, we should be careful with what we take in so as to prevent falling prey to any form of disease.
“Our health is more important than any other thing, so we should handle it with all seriousness and give it appropriate attention,” Mimiko stated.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, in his address, commended the Maternal Pulse Foundation (MPF) for complementing the state government efforts at bridging the gap between the government and the people, in the area of maternal health.
The Commissioner stated that the sensitization programme of the state government would be extended to the rural areas of the state to strengthen awareness and ensure prevention of the disease among women in the rural areas.
